Why Is My Aquarium Water Cloudy and How Do I Clear It?

Cloudy aquarium water is almost always caused by one of three things: a bacterial bloom from the nitrogen cycle establishing itself, a bloom of free-floating algae, or fine dust stirred up from new substrate. Identifying which one you have takes less than a minute, and the fix for each is completely different, so getting that identification right is the most important step.

The Three Main Causes and How to Tell Them Apart

White or milky cloudiness that appears in the first days or weeks of a new tank setup points to a bacterial bloom. You will see this most often within the first one to three weeks of filling a tank and adding fish or ammonia. The water looks hazy, almost like diluted skim milk.

Green cloudiness, sometimes described as pea-soup water, is a bloom of free-floating single-celled planktonic algae suspended throughout the water column. It is distinct from algae growing on glass or decorations. Green water is especially common in new, not-yet-balanced tanks, typically appearing within the first one to three months, and it signals a combination of too much light and too many dissolved nutrients such as nitrate and phosphate.

Immediate cloudiness after adding substrate is almost always fine dust from sand or gravel. If you just filled or disturbed the tank and the water went cloudy within minutes, this is the likely cause. It is generally harmless and clears within one to a few days as the filter captures the particles.

White Cloudy Water: Bacterial Blooms and New Tank Syndrome

A rapid population explosion of free-floating heterotrophic bacteria causes this milky haze. These bacteria feed on dissolved organic compounds from fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying matter. The bloom happens because the beneficial surface-dwelling nitrifying bacteria that would otherwise keep things in balance have not yet colonized the filter media and substrate. This is a normal event in a new tank, commonly called new tank syndrome.

The mainstream recommendation from most independent authorities is patience. The bloom typically clears on its own within roughly one to two weeks, sometimes a few days, sometimes up to two to three weeks, as beneficial bacteria establish and outcompete the free-floating ones. Resist the urge to do large water changes, clean the filter, or add chemical clarifiers. Removing the bacteria's nutrient supply or disrupting the developing filter tends to make the bloom return, often worse, and prolongs the whole process.

That said, some aquarists and aquascaping sources recommend a more active approach: using a UV clarifier to kill the suspended bacteria and following up with large water changes to remove the dead cells. This is a reasonable alternative, particularly if you want faster results, but it is not the single settled answer. The key is monitoring your water parameters either way.

Fish safety comes first. If a test kit shows ammonia or nitrite rising toward harmful levels, do a partial water change regardless of the bloom. Cloudy water itself is not directly toxic to fish. The real danger is what is causing the cloudiness: ammonia and nitrite spikes, oxygen depletion as bacteria consume dissolved oxygen, and stress. Test the water, watch your fish for signs of distress, and act on the numbers rather than the appearance.

Overfeeding is a significant driver of bacterial blooms. Uneaten food decays and releases dissolved organic compounds that fuel exactly this kind of free-floating bacterial explosion. Feed only what your fish consume in a few minutes and remove any excess immediately.

Green Water: Planktonic Algae Blooms

Green water means free-floating single-celled algae have taken over the water column. The cause is straightforward: too much light combined with excess dissolved nutrients, primarily nitrate and phosphate that accumulate from overfeeding, fish waste, and decaying matter. Direct sunlight hitting the tank is a particularly fast trigger.

A UV sterilizer is the most effective tool for clearing green water. It passes the tank water past ultraviolet-C light, killing the suspended algae cells, and typically clears the water within a few days. Other methods include a multi-day total blackout (covering every surface of the tank so no light reaches it at all), running a diatom filter or polishing pad to physically capture the cells, and performing water changes combined with reducing feeding and controlling nitrate and phosphate levels.

These treatments clear the symptom. They do not fix the root cause. You must also shorten your lighting period, eliminate direct sunlight, and address the nutrient load, otherwise the bloom returns.

One important safety note: when algae die off en masse from a blackout or UV treatment, the decaying cells can trigger an ammonia spike. Keep aeration strong during and after treatment and test your water in the days following. Whether green water itself harms fish is genuinely debated. Technical sources generally treat it as non-toxic and mainly an indicator of a nutrient and light imbalance, while other sources describe it as bad for fish. Both sides agree the real danger is indirect, primarily oxygen depletion when a large bloom dies off suddenly, so good aeration and follow-up water changes are advised regardless.

Substrate Dust: The Simplest Fix

If your water went cloudy immediately after you filled a new tank or disturbed the substrate, fine particulates are almost certainly the culprit. This cloudiness is harmless and your filter will clear it within one to a few days without any intervention.

To prevent it next time, rinse dry substrate thoroughly before adding it. Work in small batches, agitate vigorously, and pour off the water repeatedly until it runs clear. Even bags labeled pre-rinsed typically still contain enough dust to cloud a tank.
