How do I cure fin rot on my fish?
Cure fin rot by first correcting the water conditions that caused it, then applying salt or antibiotics based on how severe the infection is. For mild cases, daily water changes alone often stop the disease and allow fins to regrow. Moderate to severe cases need a gram-negative antibiotic such as kanamycin. What actually causes fin rot
Fin rot is not caused by a single outside pathogen that enters your tank. It is caused by opportunistic bacteria, most commonly gram-negative species such as Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, and Vibrio, that already live in every established aquarium. These bacteria stay harmless while your fish is healthy. They become a problem when something compromises the fish's immune system and gives bacteria an opening to colonize fin tissue.
The primary trigger is poor water quality. Elevated ammonia or nitrite directly injures the delicate tissue at fin edges, and long-term nitrate accumulation suppresses the fish's immune response while favoring microbial overgrowth. In an established tank, ammonia and nitrite should both read 0 ppm, and nitrate should stay below 20 ppm.
Several other stressors can set the same chain of events in motion:
- Overcrowding
- Sudden temperature swings
- Physical injury from sharp decor or fin-nipping tankmates
- Chronic stress from incompatible species
Any of these weakens immune function enough to let bacteria colonize damaged or weakened tissue. Understanding the stressor matters because removing it is part of the cure.
Is it really fin rot, or something else?
Before treating, confirm you are looking at fin rot and not a physical injury. The distinction changes what you do.
Signs that point to fin rot. The damage is progressive. It starts as a milky or pale discoloration at the fin edges and then spreads inward over multiple days. Edges shift to white, grey, black, or red and may appear mushy or ragged. In advanced cases fin rays shorten noticeably or sections fall away entirely. The key word is "progressive": the fins get worse each day rather than looking identical to how they did yesterday.
Signs that point to physical injury. Fin nipping by tankmates and a betta biting its own tail produce clean-edged tears or crescent-shaped chunks, sometimes appearing suddenly overnight. The edges remain clear and smooth with no discoloration. Damage limited to one fin that appeared overnight with no spreading discoloration is more consistent with physical injury than infection.
If the edges are discolored and the damage is clearly worse than it was two or three days ago, treat for fin rot.
What to do for mild fin rot
Start with the environment before reaching for any product. Perform water changes of 30 to 50 percent daily or every other day. Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, and bring all three into range. Correct temperature and pH, and identify and remove the stressor that allowed the infection to begin. Many mild cases resolve with clean water alone, without any medication.
If you want additional support, aquarium salt (plain sodium chloride, non-iodized, without anti-caking additives) is widely used at 1 teaspoon per gallon for mild cases, up to 2 to 2.5 teaspoons per gallon for moderate cases. A few important rules apply:
- Remove activated carbon from your filter before adding salt. Carbon strips additives from the water.
- Salt does not evaporate, so redose only when replacing water you removed during a change. Never add more salt on top of existing salt, or concentration climbs to harmful levels.
- Most sources cap salt treatment at 10 to 14 days.
- Salt is supportive. It may reduce osmotic stress and support healing, but it does not kill the infection on its own and is not a substitute for fixing water quality.
If your tank contains scaleless fish such as corydoras, loaches, or certain plecos, do not add salt to the main tank. Scaleless fish absorb water through their skin and take up salt far more readily than scaled species; therapeutic doses can harm or kill them. Live freshwater plants are also damaged by even moderate salt concentrations. Move the affected fish to a separate hospital tank before using salt.
What to do for moderate to severe fin rot
Antibiotics are warranted when:
- Fin margins are close to the fish's body
- Tissue loss is rapid
- The fish is refusing food or showing lethargy
- Clean water and salt have not halted progression within a few days
Because the most common causative bacteria are gram-negative, a gram-negative antibiotic is the appropriate choice. Kanamycin, sold as Seachem KanaPlex, is widely recommended for this reason. Erythromycin targets gram-positive bacteria and is less likely to be effective for typical fin rot, though it is sometimes used as a first attempt or in combination therapy.
Seachem KanaPlex directions specify 1 level measure per 20 liters (approximately 5 gallons), repeated every 2 days, for a maximum of 3 doses (roughly 6 days). Turn off UV sterilizers, ozone, and any chemical filtration media during treatment, in addition to removing activated carbon. If one course halts progression, a second course is not routinely needed. If the infection continues to advance, switching antibiotic class after a water change is preferable to immediately re-dosing the same drug.
A note on tea tree oil products. API Melafix and the betta-specific API Bettafix are sometimes marketed for fin rot. Neither is a true antibiotic, and neither reliably eliminates an active infection on its own. More importantly, the melaleuca oil in these products can coat or irritate the labyrinth organ that bettas and other labyrinth fish (gouramis, paradise fish) use to breathe air directly, potentially causing respiratory distress. Multiple experienced hobbyist communities advise against using these products with labyrinth fish, particularly at standard Melafix doses. If you keep a betta, it is safer to skip these products entirely and rely on water quality correction and, if needed, an appropriate antibiotic.
What fin regrowth actually looks like
Once fin rot is halted and water quality is stable, fin tissue does regenerate, but it takes time. New growth first appears as a clear or transparent membrane at the fin margins, resembling thin film or cellophane, before gradually thickening and regaining color. That fragile new tissue can be re-damaged easily, so keep conditions stable.
Full regrowth for a healthy betta typically takes 4 to 8 weeks for moderate loss. Heavily damaged fins may take several months, and some fins develop permanent scarring or irregular edges that do not fully recover their original shape. Seeing that clear membrane appear is a reliable sign the infection is under control and recovery is underway.

Whether fin rot is reliably contagious to healthy tankmates is genuinely debated among experienced hobbyists and sources. The causative bacteria are already present in any aquarium, and healthy fish with intact immune systems rarely contract fin rot simply from sharing water with an infected fish. The more defensible concern is that a shared poor-quality water environment compromises all fish simultaneously. Fixing water quality protects everyone in the tank.
How long does fin rot take to cure?
Mild cases treated promptly with clean water can stop progressing within a few days. Moderate cases treated with salt or antibiotics typically stabilize within 6 to 14 days. Do I need to treat the whole tank or just the sick fish?
