Mystery Snails vs. Nerite Snails: Which Cleanup Crew Member Do You Need?

Different algae diets

Nerite snails are exceptional at eating tough, established algae — including the brown diatom film and stubborn green spot algae that many other grazers ignore. Mystery snails eat softer algae and biofilm readily but are less effective against the tougher varieties.

The breeding consideration that actually matters

Nerite snails require brackish water to successfully hatch eggs — in a freshwater-only tank, they'll lay eggs constantly (the small white capsules are a common complaint) but those eggs won't hatch, so your population stays controlled. Mystery snails breed readily in plain freshwater and can multiply quickly if both sexes are present and conditions are favorable — worth knowing before adding several at once.

Other practical differences

Mystery snails are larger, more visible, and more active foragers across the whole tank, including climbing glass and decor. Nerite snails are smaller, often more focused on algae-coated surfaces, and come in more shell pattern varieties (zebra, tiger, horned).

Which to pick

For aggressive algae control without an unplanned population explosion, nerites are usually the safer default. For a more active, visible cleanup crew member where occasional babies aren't a problem, mystery snails are a great fit.
